The Cookie Jar Standoff: How Choco Almond Millet Cookies Won Over My Kids

Every household with kids has some version of the same standoff: the cookie jar sits on the counter, the kids want what is in it, and you are the one reading the ingredient label deciding how many battles to fight this week. For a long time, chocolate chip cookies were a battle I mostly lost.

The label problem

Most bakery-style cookies run on refined maida, refined sugar, and refined oil, three ingredients that show up early on almost every ingredient list and are exactly what you are trying to dial back. Telling a kid "no cookies" does not really work as a long-term strategy. Changing what is in the cookie does.

What is actually in this one

  • Baked in ghee instead of refined vegetable oil
  • Made with millets instead of maida
  • Sweetened with jaggery instead of refined white sugar
  • No artificial preservatives

The actual standoff

Here is the part that matters more than any ingredient list: the cookie still had to win on taste, because kids do not care about your ingredient philosophy, they care whether it is good. Choco Almond Millet Cookies still deliver the chocolate-chunk, slightly chewy centre a cookie is supposed to have. That is what ended the standoff, not the swap itself, but the fact that the swap did not cost us anything in taste.

A note for the grown-ups too

This is not just a kids' snack. A cookie baked in ghee with jaggery instead of refined sugar is a reasonable thing for anyone to keep in the tin, tea-time included.

Pair it with something for yourself
