Ghee Navel Therapy: The Strange Ancient Ritual People Are Rediscovering

Of all the odd things Ayurveda has handed down, ghee navel therapy might be the strangest one to explain at a dinner party. A few drops of warm ghee, placed directly in the navel, before bed. That is genuinely the whole practice. Naturally, that raises questions.

Where this comes from

In Ayurvedic tradition, the navel is considered a central point connected to the rest of the body, and applying warm oil or ghee there is an old practice tied to that idea, generally used at night as part of a calming bedtime routine.

What people actually say it is for

Anecdotally, people describe using it for dry skin, occasional bloating, or simply as a relaxing pre-sleep ritual, similar to how a scalp massage is relaxing independent of any other effect. There is no strong clinical research specifically on navel oiling, so it is best understood as a traditional wellness ritual, not a treatment for any condition.

How people who do this actually do it

  • Warm a small amount of ghee between your fingers (not hot, just gently warmed)
  • Apply 2-3 drops directly into the navel
  • Gently massage the surrounding area for a minute or two
  • Do this before bed, as part of a wind-down routine

Worth trying, or worth skipping?

This falls firmly into try-it-if-it-appeals-to-you territory. It is low-risk for most people (avoid it on broken skin or if you have a navel piercing that is healing), but it is not a proven remedy for a specific condition, and it should not replace medical care for genuine digestive or skin issues.
